Bourgneuf-en-Retz, merged with Fresnay-en-Retz under the name Villeneuve-en-Retz, is a small town in the south of Loire-Atlantique, where the Pays de Retz meets the Breton marshes of the Vendée. The Bay of Bourgneuf unrolls its family beaches from Les Moutiers-en-Retz to La Bernerie-en-Retz: fine sand, shallow water, shellfish gathering at low tide, small tidal harbours. Fifteen minutes away, Pornic lines up its old harbour, its castle, the customs officers' coastal path, Noëveillard beach and the coves running out to Préfailles and the Pointe Saint-Gildas. Market on Thursday and Sunday mornings, a thalassotherapy centre, a casino, restaurants on the harbour: it is the natural evening outing from the house.
The Breton marshes and the Passage du Gois
Behind the bay, the Breton marshes are best explored by bike or by car: canals, thatched bourrines, birdlife, windmills. Half an hour away, the Passage du Gois links Noirmoutier to the mainland at low tide, a four-kilometre road that disappears under the sea twice a day. Noirmoutier, its beaches and the Bois de la Chaise are then within reach.
Around Bourgneuf-en-Retz
