The destination

Courseulles-sur-Mer: Juno Beach, a working harbour and a town you explore on foot

On Normandy's Côte de Nacre, between Caen and Bayeux, Courseulles-sur-Mer is the town that grew up around Juno Beach. It has a long sandy beach, a harbour where fishing boats still land scallops and oysters, a compact centre with shops and restaurants, and one of the most moving memorial sites of the D-Day landings. Everything is within walking distance of both rentals, which makes it a practical base whether you come for the history or for the sea.

Juno Beach and the Juno Beach Centre

The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division landed here on 6 June 1944. The Juno Beach Centre, Canada's museum and memorial in Normandy, is open year-round and a ten-minute walk from either flat. It is the natural first visit. Our two-day itinerary “The D-Day beaches in 2 days from Courseulles” then takes you to Arromanches, Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc.

The harbour, the market and the table

In the morning you can watch the boats unload Coquilles Saint-Jacques (the local AOP scallops, October to May) and Courseulles oysters. The Tuesday and Friday market stocks your kitchen; the harbour restaurants take over in the evening. Anglers will find their spots from the pier or by boat, as our sea-fishing guide explains.

Beach, sailing and family days

A wide sandy beach at low tide, a sailing school and sand yachting, mini-golf, a skatepark, a riding school and a heated seawater pool, plus cycle rides along the sea wall to Bernières-sur-Mer: a week fills up without touching the car. Off-season the resort is quiet and the light superb, a good option from October to April.

Around Courseulles

Within half an hour by car: Arromanches and its artificial harbour, Gold Beach, Bayeux with its tapestry and cathedral, the Caen Memorial. Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc are about 45 minutes west. A few kilometres east, Bernières-sur-Mer is a quieter stretch of coast where we also let La Voile de Nacre, 50 metres from the beach.

Getting to Courseulles-sur-Mer

Caen is 20 minutes away; Paris is 2 h 30 by train to Caen, then a bus to Courseulles. From the UK, the Brittany Ferries crossing Portsmouth–Caen lands at Ouistreham, 25 minutes from the rentals. Our guide “Getting to Courseulles without a car” covers trains, buses and shuttles.

FAQ

Why book direct rather than through Holidu or Airbnb?

You deal with the owner in person. He usually replies within 24 hours and gives you the best rate for your dates: 15% less than on the platforms, and a further 10% off for a weekly stay.

Is linen included?

It depends on the rental. At Le Patio you bring your own or rent a sheets-and-towels pack on site. Details are on each rental page; just ask when you send your request.
